On 4th October 2020, IBM Developer Advocates Anam Mahmood and Sidra Ahmed conducted a workshop on how to “Enhance your Customer Experience with IBM Watson Discovery.”

The workshop was divided into two sections. The session was led by Anam Mahmood, where she talked about Watson Discovery.

“Watson discovery service is the insight engine of the Watson platform. And it was specifically built for taking large unstructured documents and returning an actual answer.”

She then explained about Smart Document Understanding, where you can train Watson Discovery to extract custom fields from your data. Furthermore, she talked about the market challenges and how discovery can help overcome those.

She then went ahead and talked about the Discovery pipeline. Starting from raw data to data ingestion which includes ingesting, converting, enriching, and normalizing data. Then moving on to storage, query, and output.

She then went ahead and talked about the different uses cases and how IBM Watson Discovery has helped some of the companies and their customers.

Use cases of Discovery

The second half of the session was a hands-on experience, where Anam familiarised the audience with IBM Cloud, and then created a Waston Discovery service on the lite plan (free). She then showed how to get started with Watson discovery and uploading your document.

After the document was successfully uploaded, she then showed them how to annotate their document, index the fields, and split the document based on their requirements, and adding enrichments to your documents. Anam then showed them how to query their document using natural language. She also showed them the analytics page where you can find all the queries and how your Discovery responded. And through this, you can improve your responses to better match your customer queries.

Sidra Ahmed helped out in the chat section by sharing her insight on Watson Discovery. She also answered the questions from the audience and kept the chat highly engaged.
